Fireworks along with a Toast to Life: Israeli Citizens Rejoice over Agreement to Return Hostages
The announcement of an agreement projected to result in the release of hostages detained within Gaza for more than 24 months has caused joy and relief throughout Israel.
An organization which has campaigned for the return of Israeli hostages in Gaza voiced âdeep appreciationâ for what it termed an âhistoric breakthroughâ.
The agreementâstill requiring agreed upon the Israeli war cabinetâwill see the return of 20 living hostages and the bodies of 28 dead hostages in return for 250 Palestinian prisoners imprisoned for life in Israeli prisons and 1,700 detainees from the Gaza region.
To date, 148 captives have been returnedâlargely through earlier truce agreementsâ51 bodies have been retrieved while eight hostages have been rescued.
Jubilant Scenes at Hostages Square
Jubilant scenes took place at Hostages Square located in Tel Aviv as hundreds of people assembled ahead of the deal being signed.
A crowd began clapping and dancing under US and Israeli flagsâa female attendee holding up a sign saying: âWe love Trump.â
âThis is a wondrous day,â the woman said.
A different person, Yael, aged 50, wept as she watched the crowd dancing.
âI am thrilledâit is such a comfort,â she said. âWe must witness their return home to their loved ones.â

Relatives Rejoice with Fireworks
The mom and sibling of a captive Israeli Matan Zangauker lit fireworks in celebration of the news of his impending homecoming.
âThey are returning!... Matan is on his way home!â Einav Zangauker exclaimed while holding her child.
Viki Cohen, the mother of captive Israeli Nimrod Cohen, shared online: âMy child, you are coming home.â
The delight was palpable throughout the avenues in Tel Aviv following the announcement.
Released Captives Offer Prayers and Toasts
Ex-captive of British-Israeli origin Emily Damari rejoiced with another freed hostage Romi Gonen, reciting prayers of gratitude, then toasting âTo lifeâ, which means âto lifeâ. She has advocated for the release of her companions, twins Gali and Ziv Berman.
Their sibling Liran Berman wrote: âMy dear Gali and Ziv, I adore you. You are coming back.â
Gil Dickmanâs cousin Carmel Gat was captured on 7 October 2023, with her remains recovered from a tunnel in Gaza almost a year later. He has participated with other hostage families in pushing for an agreement which ensures the homecoming of all those still being held in Gaza.
âI hardly believe this is real. We have waited for so long and here it is,â he expressed.
He said he was âbrokenâ that his cousin would not be among those returning to their homes yet felt âradiant with happinessâ for the families of the captives who are at last coming back.
Eitan Horn was seized from Nir Oz kibbutz in southern Israel along with his brother.
Guarded Hope from Family Members
Dalia Cusnir, whose brother-in-law Eitan Horn remains captive in Gaza, said she experienced as if she were in âin a dreamâ.
âWe are immensely thankful to President Trump and everything he has accomplished for us. It seems that this could be the start of the conclusion of this ordeal, and embracing Eitan feels closer than before,â she said.
But she cautioned that it was still too soon to rejoice.
âUntil the last hostage is here, we wonât open the champagne. Weâre going to keep fighting... until the end,â she said.
âNumerous events might occur up to the final instant which is why weâre being so, so careful. We simply wish to express gratitude to all who was involved in the efforts and make sure this deal is finalized... We will celebrate only when the last captive is safely home.â
Eitan was captured from Nir Oz kibbutz in Israelâs south along with his brother Iair, who was freed from captivity in a ceasefire deal earlier this year.
