A Renowned Horror Author

A Chilling Tale from Shirley Jackson

I discovered this narrative some time back and it has haunted me since then. The named “summer people” are a couple from New York, who rent the same off-grid rural cabin annually. This time, instead of going back to urban life, they choose to lengthen their holiday a few more weeks – a decision that to disturb everyone in the adjacent village. Everyone conveys an identical cryptic advice that no one has ever stayed in the area past the end of summer. Nonetheless, the Allisons are determined to remain, and that’s when things start to get increasingly weird. The person who delivers oil won’t sell for them. No one agrees to bring groceries to the cabin, and at the time they attempt to travel to the community, their vehicle refuses to operate. Bad weather approaches, the energy within the device fade, and when night comes, “the two old people huddled together inside their cabin and anticipated”. What could be this couple waiting for? What might the townspeople be aware of? Each occasion I read this author’s chilling and influential story, I’m reminded that the top terror comes from that which remains hidden.

Ringing the Changes from a noted author

In this concise narrative a couple go to an ordinary beach community in which chimes sound constantly, an incessant ringing that is annoying and inexplicable. The opening extremely terrifying scene happens during the evening, when they opt to go for a stroll and they can’t find the sea. There’s sand, there is the odor of decaying seafood and brine, waves crash, but the sea appears spectral, or something else and worse. It is truly profoundly ominous and every time I visit to a beach at night I remember this narrative which spoiled the sea at night in my view – in a good way.

The recent spouses – she’s very young, the husband is older – go back to the inn and discover the cause of the ringing, during a prolonged scene of claustrophobia, gruesome festivities and death-and-the-maiden meets grim ballet bedlam. It’s an unnerving contemplation about longing and decay, two people maturing in tandem as spouses, the attachment and violence and affection in matrimony.

Not just the scariest, but perhaps among the finest short stories out there, and a personal favourite. I experienced it en español, in the debut release of these tales to be published in this country in 2011.

A Prominent Novelist

Zombie from Joyce Carol Oates

I read this book near the water overseas recently. Even with the bright weather I sensed an icy feeling over me. I also experienced the electricity of anticipation. I was working on my latest book, and I had hit an obstacle. I didn’t know if it was possible a proper method to compose some of the fearful things the narrative involves. Experiencing this novel, I saw that there was a way.

First printed in the nineties, the novel is a grim journey through the mind of a young serial killer, the main character, modeled after an infamous individual, the murderer who slaughtered and mutilated 17 young men and boys in Milwaukee over a decade. Infamously, the killer was fixated with making a compliant victim who would never leave by his side and attempted numerous macabre trials to do so.

The acts the novel describes are appalling, but similarly terrifying is the psychological persuasiveness. The protagonist’s terrible, broken reality is directly described in spare prose, names redacted. The audience is plunged trapped in his consciousness, compelled to witness ideas and deeds that horrify. The alien nature of his psyche resembles a physical shock – or finding oneself isolated on a barren alien world. Going into this book feels different from reading but a complete immersion. You are swallowed whole.

An Accomplished Author

A Haunting Novel by a gifted writer

In my early years, I was a somnambulist and subsequently commenced experiencing nightmares. On one occasion, the terror included a dream in which I was stuck inside a container and, upon awakening, I found that I had ripped a part out of the window frame, seeking to leave. That building was crumbling; when it rained heavily the ground floor corridor filled with water, fly larvae dropped from above into the bedroom, and on one occasion a large rat ascended the window coverings in the bedroom.

When a friend gave me the story, I was no longer living with my parents, but the tale about the home perched on the cliffs seemed recognizable in my view, homesick as I felt. This is a novel concerning a ghostly clamorous, emotional house and a young woman who ingests calcium from the shoreline.
